Cookies and local storage

This site sets no advertising or tracking cookies. What it does store, in your own browser, is a short list of preferences and your progress ticks — so the page looks the way you left it and your place is kept. None of it reaches us.

What we store

Everything below is written to your browser's local storage on your device. It is not sent to our servers, and we have no way of reading it.

Items stored by wiltimply.info in your browser.
NamePurposeContainsExpires
wt-themeRemembers whether you chose light or dark modeThe word “light” or “dark”Until you clear it
wt-contrastRemembers whether high contrast is switched onThe word “on” or “off”Until you clear it
wt-sizeRemembers your chosen text sizeA number from 0 to 4Until you clear it
wt-progress-…Keeps your place on a roadmap or trackerWhich steps you have ticked, by step numberUntil you clear it

That is the complete list. There are no analytics cookies, no advertising identifiers, no session cookies, and no cookies set by any third party through this site.

Why local storage rather than a server

We could keep your progress in an account on our servers. That would let it follow you between devices, and it would require us to hold personal information about what you are learning — which, for a resource centre used by people during redundancy, career change and difficult periods at work, is information we would rather not have.

The trade-off is that your ticks live on one device and one browser. They will not appear on your phone if you set them on a laptop, and private browsing windows discard them when closed. If you want a record that survives, print the roadmap and mark it on paper. Several of our regular readers do exactly that, and report it works better than any screen.

Why there is no cookie banner

Consent banners exist because most sites set cookies that serve purposes beyond the visitor's own — advertising, profiling, cross-site measurement. We do none of that. The items listed above are strictly functional: they exist only to do something you asked for, such as turning on dark mode or ticking a step. Interrupting every visitor with a dialogue to consent to their own preference would be theatre rather than protection.

If you would rather nothing was stored at all, the site works perfectly with local storage disabled. Preferences and progress simply reset when you leave the page, and nothing else changes.

How to clear or block it

The quickest way to clear our stored items is to clear site data for wiltimply.info in your browser settings. On the roadmap and tracker cards, the “Clear” button removes that tracker's stored progress immediately.

  • Chrome and Edge: Settings › Privacy and security › Third-party cookies › See all site data and permissions, then find the site and delete its data.
  • Firefox: Settings › Privacy & Security › Cookies and Site Data › Manage Data, then select the site and remove it.
  • Safari: Settings › Privacy › Manage Website Data, then find the site and remove it.
  • Any browser: using a private or incognito window means nothing is retained after the window closes.

Menu names vary between versions; if you cannot find the setting, your browser's help pages will have the current path.

Third-party requests

Two things on this site are loaded from elsewhere, and your browser contacts those servers when it displays the page.

  • Google Fonts provides the two typefaces used across the site. Loading them sends your network address and standard request information to Google.
  • Google Maps provides the map on the contact page only. Google may set its own cookies within that map frame, governed by Google's policies rather than ours. Every other page on this site is free of embedded third-party content.

We use no analytics service, no tag manager, no advertising network, no social media embeds and no content delivery network beyond the font service above.

Questions

If something here is unclear, or you have found the site storing something not on this list, tell us and we will investigate and correct the page. The privacy notice covers information you send us deliberately, such as an enquiry or an event registration.
