Accessibility statement

Our commitment

We design and write for the widest range of people we can reach: readers using screen readers, magnification or voice control; readers with low vision, colour vision differences, dyslexia or attention differences; readers on old devices and slow connections; and readers working in a second or third language. Accessibility is checked before publication rather than added afterwards, and a page that fails the check does not go out.

Controls built into every page

The bar at the top of every page holds four controls, and your choices are remembered on your device:

• Text size. Five steps, from smaller than default to about a third larger. Layout reflows rather than clipping, and the setting carries through to printing.
• High contrast. Increases contrast well beyond the WCAG AA threshold and strengthens borders and focus outlines. It combines with dark mode.
• Dark mode. Follows your device preference on a first visit, then remembers your choice.
• Search. Opens with the search button, or with Ctrl and K, or by pressing the slash key. Close it with Escape.

Your browser's own zoom works normally as well, and the site remains usable at 200 percent zoom without horizontal scrolling.

Accessibility features of the site

• Semantic HTML structure with one main heading per page and a logical heading order.
• A skip link to the main content, available as soon as you press Tab.
• Landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer.
• Text alternatives for illustrations, and decorative graphics hidden from assistive technology.
• Colour contrast meeting or exceeding AA in both light and dark themes, checked on every colour pair we use.
• No information conveyed by colour alone.
• Labelled form fields, error messages tied to their field and announced, and no time limits.
• Data tables with proper row and column headers and a caption.
• Link text that makes sense when read out of context.
• Motion kept minimal, and animation disabled entirely when your system asks for reduced motion.
• No content that flashes, moves automatically or plays sound.
• Responsive layout that works from small phone screens upward, in portrait and landscape.

Keyboard operation

Everything on this site can be operated without a mouse.

The focus indicator is a solid amber outline, visible against every background we use, in both themes and at high contrast. If you find anywhere that focus disappears, please tell us — that is a defect, not a design choice.

Alternate formats

Any material on this site is available in another format, at no charge:

• Large print — 18 point or larger, in a typeface of your choosing where we can.
• Plain text — unformatted, for use with a screen reader, braille display or text-to-speech tool.
• Tagged PDF — structured for screen reader navigation.
• Printed copies — posted anywhere in Canada.
• Simplified summaries — shorter, plainer versions of longer guides, on request.

Requests usually take up to five business days. Email info@wiltimply.info or telephone (613) 555-0148 with the material you need and the format. There is no form to fill in and no reason you need to give.

Events and the reading room

• Online seminars are captioned live and published with captions and a transcript.
• ASL and LSQ interpretation can be arranged with fifteen business days' notice.
• Session materials are sent in advance on request, so you can read them at your own pace.
• The reading room at 240 Rideau Street has a step-free entrance, lift access to the fourth floor and an accessible washroom on the same floor.
• Service animals are welcome, and support persons attend at no charge and do not occupy a registered place.
• Tell us any requirement when you register, or at any point afterwards. Late notice is always better than no notice.

Known limitations

We would rather name these than let you discover them:

• The map on the contact page is supplied by a third party and we cannot fully control its accessibility. The address, transit directions and access details are given as text immediately alongside it, so no information is available only through the map.
• Recordings published before 2024 have automated captions that have not yet been corrected by a person. We are working through them; a corrected transcript for any specific recording is available on request within five business days.
• A small number of older printable worksheets exist only as untagged PDFs. Tagged or plain-text versions are available on request, and we are replacing them as we revise each one.
• Very long tables require horizontal scrolling on narrow screens. We keep tables as small as the content allows and never place essential information only in a wide table.

How we test

Every page is checked before publication with automated tools, by keyboard alone, and with at least one screen reader. We test in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, on desktop and mobile, and at 200 percent zoom. Colour pairs are checked against WCAG contrast thresholds in all four display modes we offer.

Automated testing catches perhaps a third of what matters, so we also carry out a review with people who use assistive technology daily. Their reports have produced more improvements than any tool we run.

Feedback and complaints

If any part of this site or our materials creates a barrier for you, tell us. Describe what you were trying to do, what happened, and the technology you were using if you know it — but a sentence saying “I could not use the roadmap page with my screen reader” is entirely enough to start with.

We acknowledge accessibility feedback within two business days and tell you what we intend to do and when. Where a fix will take time, we provide the content another way in the meantime.
